Poem- Dislocation

My suburb with
the egg shell
painted sky.

And cartoon children
with huge eyes.
Speaking Te Reo*.

While shadow cats slide
slickly over walls.
Then walk flinching on the lawns.

As low flying aeroplanes
buzz tree-tops
scared of too solid clouds.

Someone has kicked
the chocks from the wheels
and the world lurches drunkenly.

*Te Reo is the Maori language.

This is one of the best descriptions of a cat that I have ever read- it really captures the contrasts and contradictions that make up a feline beastie. Chuck Jones, in his autobiography, described a cat as "sitting fat and walking skinny". Uncanny creatures, those darn cats.

  6. At first glance I thought the children were speaking 'to Reo' which I took to mean REO Speedwagon. Which makes sense to me, children and the mentally infirm would be the only ones who would talk 'to REO Speedwagon'

bersoces. I don't know what it means but I like the sound of it.
