Questions:
1. I'm curious about the power source. Upon what mechanism did the door depend for its motion. I suspect some kind of gravity device with pulleys and a great weight, but one must wonder about the lifespan of the hemp rope. Then again, perhaps it is a complex arrangement of pipes and a cistern providing hydraulic power.

2. I must question the efficacy of rowing with a broom. Certainly it may be more functional than nothing, but it seems at a minimum the oarsman (broomsman?) would want to wrap the straw in some oilcloth or even a small plywood box to decrease its permeability.
