Missed Merchandising Opportunity

I am surprised that el Museo Nacional del Prado is not selling its own Teniers advent calendars.

UPDATE: Bonus Prado Blogging

Tired of her male contemporaries showing off how they could write their name in the snow, Hepzibah painstakingly taught herself to achieve even greater accuracy.

Two things: Is it Billy Bob Thorton in number 25 and why is "Burt Prelutsky Hears Noises Outside" beside number 5?

Wow, the zoom function there is kinda cool.

Not quite as cool as a link to the full-size image but I will survive. Hey hey.

That is simply unpossible -- Mr Thornton should be confined to an Advent calendar from a previous year.

Not quite as cool as a link to the full-size image but I will survive. Hey hey.

At full enlargement their images turn out to be strewn with little 'prado' watermarks, but not so as anyone but a copyright lawyer would notice.

Dood with the piccolo in 15 is putting on his best moves, and getting shot down.

And fer crissakes she was already naked. Heh heh. What a looser (accepted internets spelling)...

The zooming feature seems to be a widget that uses the same JPG for all levels of zoom. So if you right-click on the image (zoomed or not) you have the usual options of copying its location or saving the full-res version to disk.

Is that a hubcap in #22? I had thought the advent of the hubcap as symbolic reference didn't come until much later.

Don't land yourself in trouble, Smut!

I suspect it to be a frisbee. Or conceivably a roulette wheel, which fits in with the gambling theme that's happening in #22... up in the top left, Zeus has just struck the jackpot and triggered a golden cascade.
SHUT UP BBBB.

On the subject of Danae, here she is now, as quoted in 'Epicurus the Sage':

"Oh yes, I've bee having the oddest dreams. All about snakes and walking sticks and huge swords. Last night I dreamed that this beautiful man came up to me and I handed him a donut and he pushed his big thick tongue right through it! Another time I had a beautiful ring and all the men were lining up and trying it on, one at a time... and then I dreamed that this heron with a long neck was sticking his head down a little hole in the ground and..."
"That's nice, Danae. Now go and weave for a bit."

Umm, photographs of various family pets in cute poses.
There were going to be unspeakable renditions of the Great Old Ones, such as would shred the very sanity of those who view them without adequate preparation, but cats were easier.

At this point a decent HTML programmer would make an interactive version of the image that let you click on the panels and open them -- an extra panel becoming available each day -- but that would involve work.

I believe that #19 involves a dispute over the quality of the new patio that has been built for the slightly nimbused guy there. The lady builder is down on her knees explaining that he is killing her with the money he's paying and the quality he expects. Whilst nimbus man and his drunken friends lurch around and try to bend the fence.
Good to see that times do not always change

You people are all Philistines and you should go back to Philistinia if you don't like it here.

Notice the lancehead that I photoshopped into #12 for mikey's sake.

That's a pretty large selection of paint-by-numbers.

I see number 12 is from the War on Christmas propoganda unit. See the manger is now the steps of a bank, the oxen and sheep are now just a circus donkey and the 3 wise men have a court jester dressed in satin pantaloons with them. So it would be the Three Wise Men and a Coolly Ironic Person. He brought the gift of a DVD of Mariah Carey's "Glitter"

Notice in #12 how the three wise men distract Mary with their conjuring tricks and their witty patter -- "What do you mean, 'nice ass'?" -- while their accomplice sneaks around behind her. In a moment he will scrobble her, and then they will grab her myrrh and flee for their hideout in the rugged mountainous landscape of #15.
