I am informed that some four hundred years ago in the late 16th century there took place the "Cologne War", a conflict in central Europe in which people apparently struggled to see who could smell prettier. This horrific exchange started when the Germans determined that the Dutch were revolting.
As always, in matters of pretty smells and fabulous shoes, the pope won.
I find myself disappointed that I did not learn this particular bit of history from my professor emetic, the Smutty one. I'm sure the woodcuts would have been enlightening...
