Macavity's Rainbow

A screaming comes across the sky, or maybe it's a yowl
Long before a sound is heard our cat is on the prowl
The ladies always fall for him, he's got such savoir faire
But when the bomb's exploded, Macavity's not there!

Dr Lazlo Jamf conditioned him when he was but a kitten
And now a distant rocket fire is sure to leave him smitten
The distribution's fishy, and it's still up in the air
But when the bomb's exploded, Macavity's not there!

I do not have the words to say how funny this is.

Particle of hilarity? The Tig's Boson!

It is superb. I loves their torch beams

Gentlemen???

I believe the canonical punctuation is: gentlemen !!

SC and I are Gentlemen-who-have-fallen-upon-hard-times

Are you on the way to destruction?

I are a yahoo, to be sure!

Distressed Gentlefolk, eh?

Are you on the way to destruction?

I'm sure they'll make their time.

I do not get it. At all. And know I'll never get into the Cool Club. THANKS, TIGRIS.

No,but, seriously, could someone explain the joke? It's whizzing right over my misshapen head.

tigris said...

It's a lazy, minimal mash-up of this and one character in Gravity's Rainbow, Tyrone Slothrop. I think it only gets me into the Silly Club, but they have better hats than the Cool Club anyway.

Note the description of Macavity includes an enticingly large forehead...

Oooooh. O.K. I get it now, too. It was a good bit of rhyme, no doubt. Whose picture is it?

Edward Gorey AS ANY FULE KNO.
Now I am waiting for tigris to do "The Crying of the Awefull Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles".

If this inspires Lloyd-Webber to turn Pynchon's books into a West End Musical, we will KNOW WHO TO BLAME.

Edward Gorey; there's a very nice edition of Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" with all Gorey illustrations.

OK, I'm relieved. So it's not the drugs...

As I am neither a gentleman nor a scholar (i.e. had never read either of those things) it's no wonder I didn't get it.

As for my hat? I'm happy with my tin foil one, Madam. (Also, the bunny one.)

Dr.KennethNoisewater said...

I *did* know it was Gorey. So maybe I could I sit by myself in the corner of the cool club?

You should check out the Eliot poems, they're fun. Also, as Smut alludes to, they're the basis for the musical Cats, but don't let that dissuade you from reading them, as you do not HAVE to dress up as a cat or sing to read them. It's totally your choice to do that.

STOP SPYING ON ME, TIGRIS!
