YOU ARE IN A MAZE OF TWISTY LITTLE PASSAGES, ALL ALIKE

We expected the worst -- bad repercussions and tears before bedtime -- after an accident in the Riddled Research Laboratory, involving the Morphogenic Field Flux Intensifier and a breach of conceptual confinement, resulted in an infestation of hyper-intelligent woodworm in the Riddled Library.

"The literary precedents were bound to breach the fictive barriers sooner or later," Another Kiwi vouchsafed. "What with the long tradition of maths puzzles with bookworms eating straight-line tunnels through multi-volume encyclopedias."
"If we hadn't done it, Substance Laboratories would have," I agreed.
"And Pterry Pratchett didn't help by having Mr Tulip reincarnated as a woodworm."

Fortunately the Library Pixies were pleased rather than peeved by the infestation. They reckoned that the borers were enhancing the books by adding their ironic or descriptive marginalia as commentary on the flavour of the text. Here their galleries are in the form of an intricate three-dimensional maze, possibly a homage to the pattern of chasms in The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym.

"Rentokil shall put them to the sword," said Zombie William Rushton.
