1)most mining these days is open pit - the hole is out there for everyone to see
2)contrariwise, in unpacking the hidden meanings of some rock songs, i've argued that "mystified" - the title of a song by todd rundgren - could be construed as "made into a mystic" - by analogy with liquified, e.g.
