The family did ski-bunny stuff on Ruapehu while I walked up and down Mt. Tongariro, which is nearby but not so high.
Here are some icicles on Tongariro.
They're LENSES, people. They could easily have focussed the sunlight and set fire to the scoria and burnt down the entire mountain. It was lucky I was passing.
