Great Moments in Evolution #62: Aeronautilus edition

Of course this was only the beginning of argonautical aviation and cephalopod domination of the skies. That first awkward flipper-assisted leap was rapidly followed by a radiation out into all manner of ecological niches.

People give their budgies cuttlefish 'bones' to gnaw on so it made perfect sense to put a parrot skeleton in with the Riddled argonaut so it could sharpen its beak. No-one could possibly have predicted that some of the lab's taq polymerase would get in the tank as well.

UPDATE 2:
Juggernautilus.

It was all fun and games until the pterosaurs showed up.

P.S. Pterosaur is so a word, blooger.

Grainy mating dance footage taken just before the photographer was consumed.

What's funny is that I once watched this show about hypothetical alien worlds...and one of the aliens they dreamed up for this one particular planet was basically a floating octopus.

SO WHO LOOKS LIKE A BIG DUMMY NOW?

mikey said...

I must say, I've never seen it rendered quite like that.

Where would Captain Nemo sit?

Imagine my pleasant surprise that SMcG's link does not involve goatse.

Great, now my mind's eye sees a photographer's blind built like goatse guy, with the lens out the bum hole. Also, you can tell it's a mating video because it's winking.

Sadly, Nautilus!

I keep telling you people, stop storing the Taq polymerase in old Mountain Dew bottles. Extra tentacles play merry hell with the cut of one's jib.

Honest to gawd, do you people just not HAVE sock drawers?

Hamish Mack said...

Possibly we have SOCKS in them. Oatmeal coloured, unbendable socks that our mothers knitted for us in 1982 because where we lived was obviously inside the Artic Circle

...sock drawers are for when someone says "Put a sock in it!"

Watch it, I think some evolution is about to go on underneath your very noses "up" there.

Ah, that Bill Johnson dude. He's the one down in Christchurch helping demolish buildings, right?

Smut Clyde said...

It has also led Mrs Johnson to campaign for a law change in the United States which would make it illegal for men in long-term relationships to donate sperm without their partner's knowledge.

HA HA another Small Government enthusiast!

mikey beat me with the Captain Nemo joke and now I have nothing. except if anyone has a good explanation for the diff bet Pteradactyl, Pteranodon, and Pterosaur, I would love to be able to review and then explain such.

Hamish Mack said...

Pteroshend is in The Who.

Smut Clyde said...

Pshaw, he said with a silent P.

Said Kathy Hale Johnson: "He is obsessed with this. He doesn't want to stop."

It is only the donating part that confuses me.
